Epic Pass vs Ikon Pass: What Our Database Actually Covers

How many atlas resorts each pass includes, where they overlap, and what thousands of independent hills are left out.

Epic Pass and Ikon Pass dominate North American ski marketing, yet their partner lists change every spring and represent only a slice of the downhill areas Global Ski Atlas indexes from OpenStreetMap. Pass “coverage” is useful when you measure it against an open global database—not against logo counts on a brochure.

Two different meanings of “coverage”

Skiers use the word coverage for two questions that sound alike and are not:

  1. Pass roster coverage — Which mountains accept my pass product, and under what rules?
  2. Atlas database coverage — Which downhill areas exist as mapped places in Global Ski Atlas?

Epic and Ikon answer the first question for their customers. The atlas answers the second for anyone comparing terrain. Confusing the two leads to bad purchases: you buy a pass thinking you “covered the Rockies,” then discover most atlas pins in your drive ring are independents.

What atlas alignment is (and is not)

Atlas alignment is a research convenience:

  • We match partner names to OSM-derived ski areas where possible.

  • We do not claim the match equals unrestricted skiing, reserved capacity, or a guarantee the resort will remain on next year’s roster.

Marketing slides emphasize destination icons. Mapped geography emphasizes clusters:

  • Colorado — Both networks are dense. Your choice is often which ownership culture and which towns you prefer, not whether “Colorado is covered.”

The independent majority

How to compare coverage for your household

Use this sequence instead of arguing about brand loyalty:

  1. List the mountains you actually skied last season and the ones you realistically will visit next season.
  2. Mark which ones are Epic-aligned, Ikon-aligned, Indy-aligned, or none of the above in your own notes—after checking official sites.
  3. Draw drive time rings from home and from the airports you fly.
  4. Drop candidates into resort comparison so size and trail mix are comparable.
