How we’re making it
From data to print-ready layout
The book is produced from the same data that powers the Online Atlas. We export near-finished maps and fun facts, generate AI copy scaled by resort size, then run everything through a wiki-style editor for community edits before publishing.
- 1. Data — Ski-area datasets (resorts, lifts, pistes, terrain, elevation)
- 2. Export — Detailed ~95% polished maps + fun facts → Adobe Photoshop
- 3. AI copy — Scaled by resort size: one sentence (small), paragraph (large), full page (largest)
- 4. Wiki-style editor — Editable content; users can suggest edits before we lock copy
- 5. Publish — Into InDesign or Scribus for final layout and print
Scope & economics
3-volume set, print-on-demand
Page allocation by resort size
- Small hills (< 10 trails) — ¼ page each
- Medium (10–30 trails) — ½ page each
- Large (30+ trails) — 1 full page
- Mega resorts — 2-page spreads
The atlas covers 3,000+ ski areas worldwide: roughly 900 in North America, 900 in Europe, and 900+ across Asia, Africa, South America, and Oceania. That’s 1,400–1,750 pages of full-color maps and resort profiles. To keep each book a manageable size (~750 pages per volume), we split the atlas into a 3-volume set—one per region.
Each volume is priced around $60–80, in line with premium atlases and coffee table books (National Geographic, Lonely Planet, and similar titles often sell for $50–100+). Ski enthusiasts are planners and collectors—we built this for people who pore over maps and dream about their next trip.
